This afternoon we feature an talented artist with a difference. Joe Murtagh is an imaginative artist living in Liverpool, whose high-energy work is a contemporary combination of the digital and the traditional. Joe’s art education was traditional enough, studying Art & Design on a two year BTEC course, then a Fine Art Degree, where he finally focused on being a figurative sculptor, working with stone and metal. Joe later moved into teaching art, in schools and colleges, before becoming a web designer, graphic designer, photo retoucher and digital artist.
Joe’s first love of drawing has resurfaced in his digital reproductions, comprising of ultra pop portraits and acid dark social commentary. He uses strong colour to enhance a subject, and likes to experiment with digital software to produce standout images. His aim is to produce work he hasn’t seen before, purposefully avoiding mimicking his contemporaries. He is inspired and influenced by art history, movies, comic books, graffiti, music….questioning everything modern life has to offer, good and bad. His artwork still retains elements of his roots in the fine arts, drawing and painting with the mouse or pen, rather than relying on the software alone to do the work for him. Joe arms himself with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in order to create these dynamic, lively, and dreamy images that are a perfect compliment to a magazine article, a wall, or a t-shirt.
